Film flop for former bingo caller Russell Crowe

Film flop for Russell

Aussie hunk Russell Crowe has suffered something of a film flop this month, according to reviews. Crime thriller The Next Three Days stars Russell as a professor whose wife is jailed for murder. He'll stop at nothing to get her out, and takes the law into his own hands. Unfortunately, US critics called the film "dull" and "bad", while it pulled in just £4.3 million at the box office; a small amount compared to the amazing £200 million earned by Russell's previous film, Robin Hood.

Of course, the problem could be down to the film being released on the same day as Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows; we think we know which film most people would rather see!

Of course, if you're a big fan of thrillers like Russ's film, Bucky Bingo has lots of side games that could entice you. For example, Cops N Robbers is a bingo scratch card with prizes of up to £1,000 from a 25p play. That kind of money will certainly come in useful for Russell, if his career really is on the downturn; alternatively, he could just go back to his first job.

Russell's bingo past

It's a little-known fact that before becoming the Oscar-winning star of Gladiator and other films, Russell made a living as a bingo caller. Aged just 22, he worked at a bingo club in Rotorua – known to the locals as Roto-Vegas – on New Zealand's North Island (pictured). Unfortunately, the famously temperamental star was fired for making his bingo calls rude; we can only imagine how rude!

Luckily for Russell Crowe fans, it was after being fired from the bingo hall that he got his big break in musical Bad Boy Johnny. Not too long afterwards, he got his first film role in The Crossing, and the rest is history. We bet those New Zealand bingo fans couldn't believe their eyes when their cheeky bingo caller turned up on the big screen!

The Next Three Days is released in UK cinemas in January 2011.
